TRIP TO CHARLESTON

Ted and Sylvia,
I went to Charleston last week. The trip down was fine. The
accommodations were okay and so was the breakfast. We arrived 45 minutes
late - not a big deal.
To come back, I went to the station and was told at 7:45pm that
the 8:08pm train was not expected until midnight. I had no choice but to
remain at the station for the entire time since the Charleston station is in the
middle of nowhere. No food or drink was available nearby and since I had
only a limited amount of cash, I could not take a taxi back to town to
wait there. I sat on benches and those small plastic chairs for the whole
time. I was furious. I opened a file with the Amtrak customer relations
department.
When the train finally arrived, at 12:45am, I boarded to find
my bed already made up. I took a shower and went to bed. Enjoyed an
unexpected breakfast outside of Petersburg and then they took orders for
hamburgers from the sleeping car passengers for an unexpected lunch. I
arrived 6 hours and 10 minutes late. I should have know since I had
read the Wall Street Journal earlier that there would be delays. In the future, I will
call ahead.
I finalized the file with customer relations and they gave me a $100
refund for the poor service. I will use that this weekend to go up to
Newark to see my sister-in-law.
